" Communautarismes "
article of Tariq Ramadan and reactions, October 2003

Origin: Review "The Arch"

What it is necessary well to call the business Tariq Ramadan seems, right now, of an extreme gravity. The fact of indexing, to dedicate them to the gémonies, of the intellectuals Jewish (or supposed such) is a company of which it is not necessary to underline the implications.

Critical of (new) intellectual Community

By Tariq Ramadan Friday October 3, 2003

This text, published here of exclusiveness, has been just refused by the newspapers the World and Release. These refusal, five times repeated for the World, are more than regrettable: one is caught some with the only " Moslem communautarism " but one pains to accept the criticism of these intellectuals so much dear by the media which are useful to us with interview and article length of the very debatable and often skewed analyses of the French company like international scene. Taguieff, Adler, Finkielkraut, Glucksman, Kouchner, BHL, inter alia, say the truth of the world, the goods, malicious, of " our allies " and Israel, always, escapes from their criticisms selective.

The re-entry is agitated. One does not count any more the books treating of the anti-semitism or the Zionism. For the ones, there would be a new anti-semitism among young French of immigrant origin (Arab and Moslem) or in the rows of the movement altermondialist which would dissimulate it behind their critic of the Zionism and the State of Israel. Opposite, one denounces " an intolerable blackmail " with the judéophobie.

Force is to note, upstream this debate, a phenomenon which scrambles the data. Since a few years (before even the second intifada), of the French Jewish intellectuals that one had hitherto regarded as thinkers universalists started, on the national level like international, to develop analyses increasingly directed by a Community concern which tends to relativize the defense of the universal principles of equality or justice.

Work of Pierre-Andre Taguieff is very revealing. Its lampoon the news judéophobie is the prototype of an "erudite " reflexion which despises scientific criteria. The sociologist moulted himself as a defender of a community in danger whose new real or potential enemy is the Arab, the Moslem, was it French. One does not find here a setting in prospect founded on a critical analysis for the social policy of the State, realities of the suburbs or even of the international scene. The conclusion is limpid: the Jewish community of France would face the new danger that this new population of Maghrebian origin represents which, in.liaison.with the extreme left, would standardize the judéophobie and would justify it by a criticism very twisted of Israel and a " absolute antisionism ".

It is especially Alain Finkielkraut who excels in the kind: one knew the thinker implied in the great social debates but here is that the horizon is reduced and that the philosopher became a Community intellectual. Its last work, In the name of the Other, reflexions on the anti-semitism which comes presents as an attack without nuance of all the drifts anti-semites (altermondialists, immigrant or media). Alain Finkielkraut pours in all excesses without being constrained to support Sharon. The debate is not founded any more on universal principles and even if it claims to be related to the common European tradition, its standpoint reveals a communautarist attitude which distorts the terms of the debate, in France as about Palestine. Its denunciation of the " worship of the Other " does not cease, out of mirror, exacerbating the feeling of otherness of the Jew-victim and the wall of shame becomes " a simple end of safety " that Israel builds with against c¦ur. Jews or Zionists (those which make the difference are anti-semites) will be never victims or oppressors like the others.

Alexandre Adler had testified, at the side of Finkielkraut, in the surrealist lawsuit brought with the journalist Daniel Mermet. One could be astonished. The attentive analysis of its writings lights us nevertheless. The reading of the world that it proposes to us includes/understands especially taking into consideration its attachment in Israel. It does not hide any and in the collective work, the Zionism explained to our pals, it advances that it " becomes more and more inenvisageable to conceive a Jewish identity which would not comprise a strong component Zionist "1 and further: " a balance will be established between diaspora and Israeli membership, around whose the new Judaism will develop "2. One will raise the mixture of kinds but one will retain the lesson at the time to analyze his positions in international politics, just as those of certain French Jewish intellectuals, in particular when Adler points out itself that the United States reinforced their support for Israel, which in addition established a strategic alliance with India.

The recent war in Iraq acted like revealing. Intellectuals as different as Bernard Kouchner, Andre Glucksman or Bernard-Henri Lévy, who had taken courageous positions in Bosnia, in Rwanda or in Tchétchénie, curiously supported the intervention américano-British in Iraq. One could wonder why such an amount of the justifications appeared unfounded: to eliminate a dictator (why not front ?), for the democratization of the country (why not Saudi Arabia ?), etc. The United States acted certainly in the name of their interests but it is known that Israel supported the intervention and that its military advisers were engaged in the troops like indicated it British journalists taking part in the operations (The Independent, June 6, 2003).

It is also known that the architect of this operation within the Bush administration is Paul Wolfowitz, notorious Zionist, who never hid that the fall of Saddam Hussein would guarantee a better safety in Israel with assured economic advantages. In his Western book against West, André Glucksman delivers to us a plea coleric for the war which overlooks very speaking the Israeli interests. Bernard-Henri Lévy, defender selective of the great causes, criticizes very little Israel in which it does not cease testifying its " solidarity to Jew and French "3. Its last countryside against Pakistan seemed like exit of nowhere, almost anachronistic. While being interested in abominable and inexcusable murder of Daniel Pearl, it benefits from it to stigmatize Pakistan whose enemy, India, should thus naturally become our friend S.Lévy is not of course step the intellectual guide of Sharon but its analysis reveals a curious similarity as for the moment of its stating and its strategic aimings: Sharon has just paid a historical visit in India in order to reinforce the economic co-operation and soldier between the two countries.

That it is on the interior level (fight against the anti-semitism) or on the international scene (defense of the Zionism), one attends the emergence of a new attitude among certain omnipresent intellectuals on the media scene. It is legitimate to wonder which principles and which interests they defend in the highest degree ? One perceives clearly that their political positioning answers Community logics, as Jews, or nationalists, as defenders of Israel. Disappeared the universal principles, the identity fold is obvious and oblique the debate since all those which dare to denounce this attitude are treated anti-semites.

It is however on this ground which the dialogue must begin if one wants to avoid the shock of the perverse communautarisms. If it is necessary to require Arab intellectuals and actors and Moslems whom they condemn, in the name of the right and of the common universal values, terrorism, violence, anti-semitism and Moslem States dictatorial of Saudi Arabia in Pakistan; one should not about it less await Jewish intellectuals whom they denounce in a clear way the repressive policy of the State of Israel, his alliances and other method doubtful and which they are in the forefront of the fight against discriminations that their Moslem fellow-citizens undergo. One will record with respect courage of those and those, Jewish (not inevitably altermondialists or of extreme left), which decided to rise against all the injustices and in particular those which are the fact of Jews. With the Arabs and the Moslems who have same coherence, they are the light and the hope of the future because this one has more than ever need for this requirement and this courage.

Item 10/10/03 - Nº1621
The scratch pad of Bernard-Henri Lévy
Tariq Ramadan and altermondialists.

Here a few days which circulates on the Net, within the framework of the lists of discussion preparing the European social Forum which has had to be held in Paris and Saint-Denis, from the 12 to next 15 November - within the framework, in other words, of spaces of free debate of the great mobility altermondialist -, a text striking of Mr. Tariq Ramadan, this Imam genevois become, for a few years, one of the spokesman of the hardest currents of European Islam.

It is learned there for example that the French intellectuals - Bernard Kouchner, André Glucksmann, Pascal Bruckner - who supported the American war in Iraq did it only according to the " Israeli interests ".

It is discovered there that the writer and leader-writer Alexandre Adler, whose readers of the World and, today, the Barber know the independence of mind, do not think and writes only according to the only grid of reading of " its attachment in Israel ".

One discovers there that the historian of the racism Pierre-Andre Taguieff, which is - one reddens to have to specify it - not to be not Jewish, is representative, with Alain Finkielkraut, of a group of " Jewish intellectuals " whom one " had hitherto regarded as thinkers universalists " and whose " analyses " " would be more and more directed " by the concern " Community Jew ".

And, as for me, I have stupor to read, in this text always, that my recent " countryside against Pakistan ", which seemed to Mr. Ramadan " like exit of nowhere and almost anachronistic ", finds its true significance when one takes the trouble "to bring it closer  " the " historical visit " Ariel Sharon in India, enemy country of Pakistan - I have stupor to see one year of investigation on the death of Daniel Pearl, this martyr of the freedom of the press cut the throat of by a commando of insane of God, reduced to the row of simple footboard of a prepared diplomatic operation of long date by the chief of a government of which I did not cease saying, here and elsewhere, all that separates me.

I pass on the infamy of these proposals which, under cover of an attack in rule against the Community spirit, make to only ressusciter the good old man topic of the Jewish plot: Lévy and Adler as occult ambassadors of Sharon - the Protocol of Wise of Sion is not far.

I pass on the case of Mr. Ramadan itself, this skilful intellectual, trained at the school of the Moslem Brothers, but which had always known, up to now, in its _ exoteric and public expression, to offer a smooth, suitable frontage: with this text, it low puts the mask, it is dishonoured.

The true problem, it is the place where this article, after being refused by the majority of the national big national dailies, ended up landing - the problem, it is the attitude of these altermondialists who lodge, that one wants it or not, a nauseous text without, per hour when I write, in any way to have repudiated it.

Libertarian reflex people believing, as with good old days, who it is interdict to prohibit ?

Hybrid statute of these sites of free word which, not requesting their contributions, wouldn't have either reason to denounce them ?

Or desire, old man, him, like the extreme left, not to cut itself of a base - in fact " the suburbs " - which would see in Ramadan one of its flag-holders ?

All the explanations are possible.

But no, that must be known as, does not make this silence acceptable.

No reason in the world, no calculation of any kind could make forget that declarations as these are not opinions but calls with hatred, offences.

I do not agree always, far is necessary myself some, with MISTERS Gresh, Cassen or Bové. But I respect their combat. I recognize, in spite of the disagreements, their intellectual and moral honesty. That they can, under pretext of not despair new Billancourt islamist, to guarantee similar remarks, that they can, by trick or tactical operation, to let only one moment think of those which listen to them that the anti-semitism is a manner like another of saying its political revolt, here which would be disastrous, not only for them, but for us all.

Mr. Ramadan, dear friends altermondialists, is not, cannot be, of yours.

The anti-semitism, dear Gresh, dear Bové, is not, cannot become again, this socialism of the imbeciles which cost so expensive, you know it like me, with our elder.

We can, it is perfectly normal, not to have not always the same opinion on such or such extreme question. But there is a category of statements which, for each one among us, must absolutely mark the threshold of the intolerable one: it is the case of the racist statements (reason for which I had, on my side, immediately stigmatized the book with Oriana Fallaci); but it is the case, at least as much, of the statements anti-semites (and this is why I entreat you to take your distances, very quickly, with a character who, by accrediting the idea of a conspiracy of the elites to the orders of the Zionism, do nothing but throw fire in the spirits and open the way in the worst case).

It goes there from your probity.

It goes there from our shared democratic values.

When Islam is invited to the social Forum

Cumbersome Mr. Ramadan

Entrism or strategic alliance? Several Moslem groups joined the movement altermondialist. All was well until the publication on Internet of a text signed Tariq Ramadan, their inspirer, who is caught some to the " Jewish intellectuals "...

Can one be a altermondialist and anti-semite ? A priori not. But the question, reducing and unjust, is nourished of a scandal.

Friday, the lists of discussion Internet preparing the European social Forum organized in Paris and Saint-Denis in November grew rich by a strange text, fleurant the prejudices antijuifs and the ideology of the plot. Its author: Tariq Ramadan, teacher and preacher genevois, apostle of an Islam to the colors of Europe, adulated lecturer of young Moslems in search of identity... and organizer of the political weddings between Islam and the altermondialisation.

Its object: to denounce "the new Community intellectuals intend the Jewish intellectuals, so much dear by the media, which are useful to us with interview and article length of the very debatable and often skewed analyses".

Cities in the name of their presumedly common origins, Alain Finkielkraut, Pierre-Andre Taguieff, Bernard-Henri Lévy, Andre Glucksmann, Alexandre Adler, Bernard Kouchner, all culprits of a capital sin: " Their political positioning answers Community logics, as Jews, or nationalists, as defenders of Israel. "

And Ramadan their reproach to defend the Zionism, to support Sharon or to have supported the war of Bush in Iraq invented war, specifies it, by the " notorious Zionist " Paul Wolfowitz. Alas for its author, the text is truffé errors and amalgams. Pierre-Andre Taguieff, historian of racism, labelled Jewish by Ramadan, is not it " For Ramadan, whoever fights the anti-semitism is inevitably a Jew ", says it, éc¦uré.

Finkielkraut asserts certainly its Jewish engagement. But this close relation of Peace Now is described like a defender of Sharon. Neither the humane Socialist Kouchner nor the neoconservator and defender of the humans right Glucksmann are determined according to the Judaism or of the Zionism (see its answer).

Bernard-Henri Lévy, opposing to the war of Iraq, is introduced like one of his partisans. And it deliver-investigation that the same BHL published on the American journalist Daniel Pearl, assassinated in Pakistan by islamists, becomes the advertisement of strategic alliance between enemy India of Pakistan and Israel! " This reduction is an infamy, comments on Lévy. When it was said to me that Ramadan was anti-semite, I refused to follow. I was to be naive. "Anti-semite, Ramadan? Or so marked by a vision communautarist of the world which it plates on the others his own logic? Because the same Ramadan requires of the altermondialists, in the name of "cultural and religious diversity", to accept, in their movement, a specifically Islamic component, his, which would not be based as a whole !

Before diffusing its text on the Net, Ramadan had proposed it, in vain, in the " World " and " Release ". " I did not want to publish a text which amalgamates names of people according to their real or supposed origins ", explains Jean-Michel Helvig, person in charge for the Rebonds pages of " Release ".

Estimating itself censured, Ramadan used Internet and the networks of his/her new friends. Thus causing a small political catastrophe and a beautiful embarrassment " One should not make publicity with Ramadan, it asks only that ", murmur a person in charge for Attac the rather hostile to preacher and not dissatisfied to see it " showing its true nature ".

Others call upon the political priorities " For some errors and some contestable sentences, one will not polemize with Tariq, entrusts an organizer of the European social Forum. One will direct and will not isolate Moslem associations. The stake is too important."

Stake ? It is not thin, indeed. Because the altermondialists simply claim to reconcile Islam, the beurs and the policy. And some regard Ramadan as an irreplaceable ally. Its exit of road occurs after several months of joint work, during which Moslem groups were incorporated with the traditional currents of " the other possible world ": Profs, trade unionists, peasants were accustomed to the presence of buckled young women and exégètes of Coran.

The European social Forum prepared by a handle of militants, without ideological control nor forced majority will have been the ideal place of a entrism for some decided activists. Thus, the MIB, Movement of Immigration and the Suburbs. Minority group and very radical, analyzing the situation of the cities and the young people of Maghrebian origin like " colonialism "... The MIB was born from the immigrant fights of the years 1970, of the steps of the beurs of the years 1980, the detestation of S.O.S-Racism. It maintained a radicality refusal, animated the fights against the double sorrow, praised " the intifada suburbs " and stressed a slogan fraught with promises of riots: " No justice, not of peace." It politicized the racist murders and burs. Then found itself lost, with the turning of the century. Its influence was blown. Its secularity became handicap. The cities looked at elsewhere. Worms of the mosques, the religious groups, which, vis-a-vis with the failures of integration, did not propose only any more the revolt, but the identity, and gathered hundreds of young people in spiritual conferences.

The MIB passed alliance with these rivals. Collective of the Moslems of France (CMF), Union of the Young Moslems of Lyon " When one will request, those of the MIB benefit from it to smoke a detonator ", has fun Karim Azzouz, person in charge for the CMF. For the remainder, they agree. Identification in Palestine, rejection of the United States, detestation of the "paternalist " left and Jospin " which treated Hezbollah of terrorist ". It is this alliance of radicals beurs and Moslems which came toquer to the door from the social Forum. And which was made adouber. Malaisément of access " the first time that I entered a part, at a preparatory meeting of the FSE, the speaker is stopped speaking, so much it was surprised to see a veiled girl ", tells Siham Andalouci, militant Collective of the Moslems of France.

Then mayonnaise took. Because the topics of the altermondialisation meet the pangs of the cities " the dictatorship of the marks on our premises, it is the delinquency caused by the fascination of the young people for scratched clothing ", explains Abdelaziz Chambi, pillar of the Union of the Young Moslems of Lyon, but old of working Fight, and which kept, behind Islam, a liveliness any Marxist.

Siham Andalouci, it, has in its wallet a chart of the Greens, in its luggage a diploma of history of third cycle. It militates since years in associations in Roubaix " Over there, my veil passes unperceived. It is since I attend the Parisian intellos of left that one summons me to explain me. Sometimes, it is exhausting... " At the end of exhaustion the respect is. Gradually, Andalouci integrates the family. The traditional altermondialists accept the Moslems practise like a homogeneous group. One evolves/moves on the question of the scarf. One gives a premium of representation to the monks... After all, one hears, in England, the extreme-left and the islamists have fact causes common in the manifs antiguerre. And, formerly, in France of the catholic or Protestant groups joined and nourished the left...

And Ramadan? It plays a driving part. He is the big brother, the thinker, of the Collective of the Moslems of France. While its young troops enter the committees altermondialists, dialogues to him with the chiefs. "I can fill you of the rooms", explains to them it. Ramadan carries a wound. Young teacher, in Geneva, it saw himself ostracizing when it was defined as practising Moslem. He keeps a thirst for recognition for it. He wants to be allowed with his luggage, to become component European space with his specificity, by refusing the integration-assimilation. He wants to mark the landscape, to transform the relationship between the policy and the religion...

Alain Gresh, editor of the " diplomatic World ", body founder of the French altermondialisation, is one of his friends. Gresh is atheistic. But it believes that the laymen lost the battle of the suburbs. From this a priori from defeat, it draws a practical conclusion: it is not a question any more of choosing between Islam and the laymen, but of choosing Islamic allies: _ it be necessary support Ramadan, or one be the salafistes, explain it with its friend of "Diplo". Bernard Cassen, secretary-general of the newspaper, first president d' Attac, twists the nose. Convinced layman, it hardly tastes the identity assertion when it is moulted in political claim. And the claim of Ramadan to incarnate the populations unweaves some seems to him a usurpation. But the dialogue is however tied. In spring, executives of Attac meet Ramadan and them his. And Cassen goes even to a debate to Saint-Denis, organized by the networks of Ramadan, to prepare the social Forum. In the room, women veiled in a number give a new color to a debate altermondialist. Cassen, which had the surprise to enter by a reserved door to the women, points out the principles of any alliance: equality of the sexes and secularity. The dialogue is tied, even if mistrust perdure...

The israélo-Palestinian question, and what it implies, then does not seem to disturb new alliance. The sensitivities propalestiniennes of the altermondialist family are appropriate for the Moslem groups. But from there to accept that Ramadan blames, by name, of the intellectuals reduced to their Jewish origin, and claims to embark the social Forum in this combat, there is a step that no one had not envisaged. His/her new friends undoubtedly will choose to be unaware of it. Not to despair suburbs. But with the risk to involve them in a tragedy dead end.

An obsession anti-semite by Andre Glucksmann

Mr Ramadan says in short: Glucksmann does not think with its head, it thinks with its race. Nothing very nine relating to me. In the friends of Mr. Ramadan the recurring reference at the racial origin of Lévy and me circulated, when we denounce the great massacres islamists in Algeria in 1997 (massacres which touched, I point out it, the Moslem civil populations). Acting of the war against Saddam Hussein, I leave the care with Tariq Ramadan to explain why 18 governments out of the 25 which account the European Union divided my opinion on the need for an intervention.

Are they all Jewish? Are they all directed by Jews? Are they all under Jewish influence? Mr Ramadan, who makes mine oppose my position concerning the defense of the Bosnians (Moslem), Kosovars (Moslems) and Tchétchènes (Moslems) to that which I post against Saddam Hussein (who killed out of the Moslems with turn of arm), should not be astonished so easily because the mafieux collaborationist of Poutine with Grozny, Kadyrov, posts in his office a photograph of him tightening the hand of Saddam Hussein, as testifies some Patrick de Saint-Exupéry (Jewish obviously) in this sheet to cabbage one cannot more Jewish who is called " the Barber ".

What is astonishing, it is not that Mr Ramadan is anti-semite, but whom it dares from now on to assert like such. And that it makes followers. I indeed receive many letters which exhale an anti-semitism bestial, little heard since 1945. And some explain the position of "the band of the Four" (Bruckner, Goupil, Kouchner and Glucksmann) by their (unduly) supposed racial origin... As if the signature of the Jew that I am was contagious and infected my co-signatories.

Andre Glucksmann
